The Handcrafted Soap and Cosmetic Guild (HSCG) is a non-profit trade organization dedicated to meeting the needs of the handcrafted soap and cosmetic industry. It fosters networking, educates the public, and advocates for its members with legislators.
You may know it by its former name, the Handcrafted Soapmakers Guild (or HSMG). This year, the members voted to change the name to include makers of cosmetics (like lotion, lip balm and sugar scrubs) as well as soap. This makes a lot of sense, since so many soapmakers find that making bath and body products is a natural extension of their business.
The HSCG is a great resource with lots of benefits, whether you are looking to buy handmade products, to order from a supply vendor, or to take a soapmaking class. And if you are a member, there is a long list of benefits: from an online lye calculator, to printed promotional materials, group liability insurance, vendor discounts and free customizable webstores. There are so many opportunities to help build and grow your soap business. At The Nova Studio, we take advantage of lots of those, including the teacher listings that help people find classes to learn how to make handmade soap.
One of the most intensive learning experiences is the HSCG Annual Conference. It's three days jam-packed with talks and demonstrations from the industry's leading business owners, teachers, and vendors. But the best part by far is the opportunity to meet and network with other soap and cosmetic makers from all over the US, Canada and even overseas. Every year I'm reminded of how soapmakers take their craft very seriously, but also know how to have a good time!
